BULLYING MYTHS

• MYTH: Those who bully are insecure and have low self-esteem. They pick on others to make themselves feel better about themselves.
•      RESEARCH: Those who bully others have average or above-average self-esteem. They often have aggressive temperaments and a lack of empathy.


• MYTH: Those who bully are looking for attention. If you just ignore them and the problem, the bullying will stop.
•      RESEARCH: Those who bully are looking for control over others, and they rarely stop if their behavior is ignored. The level of bullying usually increases if the bullying is not addressed by adults who have authority in the environment where the bullying is happening.


• MYTH: Kids will be kids. Bullying is just part of growing up.
•      RESEARCH: Bullying is seldom outgrown; it’s simply redirected. Sixty percent of boys identified as bullies (in middle school in one research study) committed at least one crime by the time they they time they were 24 years old.


• MYTH: Kids can be cruel about differences.
•      RESEARCH: Physical differences play on a small party in bullying situations. Most victims are chosen because they are sensitive, anxious, and unable to stand up for themselves.


• MYTH: Those who are tormented by bullies need to learn to stand up for themselves and deal with the situation.
•      RESEARCH: Those who are bullied are usually younger or physically or emotionally weaker than their attackers. They may lack social skills or have not had friends who are able to defend themselves. They are less powerful and have a hard time defending themselves.
